A$K for Equal Pay!

If you don’t ask, the answer is always no. ~ Nora Roberts This week there has been a great deal of talk about the gender pay gap. While attending the NAWMBA Phoenix Chapter’s Annual Dinner, Councilwoman Kate Gallego shared that she is leading the charge to close the gender pay gap in Arizona. Councilwoman Gallego stated, that while Arizona women fared better than many other women in the country, the gap still exists. The team over at Take the Lead also launched their #25not95 initiative this week. I was so honored to be a part of the initiative to achieve gender parity in 2025 versus 2095! What a novel idea. I would love to see gender parity achieved within the next 10 years versus the next 80. Who has time for that?! And while there are many institutions, attitudes, or barriers that must be addressed, there was also a part that could not be ignored. Many working women earned less than men because they simply didn’t ask! Yes. You read that right… women often don’t ask. In my work, I see it all the time. Not only with my clients and workshop participants, but even among colleagues and other women leaders. This week the theme for me and several of my colleagues was #justask. That’s right, despite my work as a women’s leadership development champion and advocate, there are times when even I fall into the trap of not asking for what I want and deserve.
